We rely entirely on private donations and fundraising efforts to support our goal of ending homelessness in Philadelphia.
Behind each one of these doors is a family. A family that, until recently, didn’t have a place to call home, squatted in abandoned buildings, or "couched" with friends and family if they were lucky.
Behind each one of these doors is warmth, security, safety. Above all, behind each one of these doors is hope, stability and a new beginning.
Behind each one of these doors is a place to call Home.
Door #1
Nanette, her 18 month-old daughter and 6 year-old son were constantly moving between friends and family while she desperately tried to create a normal life for her family. SafeHome Philadelphia found her a modest apartment, helped her move in, arranged for IKEA Philadelphia to donate bunk beds, installed smoke detectors and arranged for separate electric metering. Nanette is thrilled to have her very own kitchen, is able to look for work and is proud that her son is enrolled permanently in a local school. |
Door #2
Rosemary and her two sons were temporarily living with her sister after separating from her husband. Four days after she started a great new job, one of her son's was the victim of a heartbreaking incident and the family had to be re-settled on an emergency basis. SafeHome Philadelphia moved her and her boys quickly into an affordable, bright one-bedroom apartment. Rosemary's sons are now safe and sound and she has been able to jump-start a new life. |
Door #3
Connie, her two daughters and son were squatting in an abandoned building and paying "rent" for an illegal electrical hook-up. As two of her children are disabled and suffer from asthma, her situation was untenable. SafeHome Philadelphia found them a clean, two-bedroom apartment, helped her appeal for unemployment, and, because she had no furniture, rented a truck to pick up furniture donated by board members and friends. Connie is applying for a job, and in the words of her son Carl, "is so glad to have a home of her own." |
Door #4
Aisha'shusband died nearly a year ago, leaving her with severely reduced income. Under increasing pressure from her landlord, Aisha and her daughter were at risk of eviction and becoming newly homeless. SafeHome Philadelphia worked with Aisha to avoid the shelter system by "downsizing" into an affordable house. Today, Aisha and her daughter live in a beautiful house, small enough to be affordable, but large enough to call home. |
Door #5
Juanita was afraid for her own life and her teenaged daughter was threatening to run away from home because of unrelenting abuse. It was literally at the 11thhour when their call for help came. SafeHome Philadelphia helped Juanita remain in a welfare-to-work program so important to her future, and paid the security deposit on a one-bedroom apartment. Juanita's terror is over and her situation stabilized to the point where she confidently looks forward to being self-sufficient in no time. |
Door #6
Having lost his job, Tom and his pregnant girlfriend Tanya were scheduled for eviction on December 12th. Without other resources, the shelter system loomed large. SafeHome Philadelphia moved Tom and Tanya into their new apartment on December 11th, pre-paid the required 3 months rent (security deposit, first and last month) and helped Tom locate a part-time second job to ensure that rent will be paid. Having helped Tanya sign up for medical and other benefits, she is able to confidently prepare for their new arrival. |
